Review

I got a lot out of this book. It was well worth the money and I think it paid for itself (see below). I had some specific things I wanted to accomplish and the author lead me through the steps to succeed at each task. For example, I wanted my LAN with Linux and Win-XP computers to share files and printers. The chapter on file and printer sharing with Samba started out with a basic configuration and then progressed to more sophisticated settings. I am pretty sure the author only covered about 10% of the capabilities of Samba, but my LAN now works!! big grin I had tried the Samba printing thing before without success. I think the critical success factor is that this author covered both the Linux and the Windows configurations.

I also learned how to save a few bucks. I learned how to gracefully and automatically shut down my system each night at a set time. Now I just walk away from it and it shuts itself off and stops using electricity while I am fast asleep. By not running the server on the midnight shift, I think I can save about $80/year.

I recommend this book to anyone with an intermediate understanding of Linux who wants to use the system to perform a few tricks thumbs up It is 553 pages. The table of contents for Linux Cookbook includes the following topics:
