What Do I Do Next?

We think you came to this page because you think our work here is pretty interesting and you want to contribute some of your expertise to the body of knowledge that we are collecting here. That's GREAT! Thank you very much. smile Other authors have asked the same questions that you have, and we have built this page to help you get started. This is what you can do next.

As Dr. Stephen Covey says in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, habit seven is to sharpen the saw. In this case, that means to get off to a good start creating content, it would be best to take some time to know how to use the Wiki web site and think about what and how we are trying to communicate. The Wiki is our medium for conveying our message, ideas, and expertise. First actions should focus on learning how to use the Wiki and to understand the content that already exists.

Specifically, I recommend the following:

  1. Register as a user so that you will have the privilege of editing pages.
  2. Spend some time with the WelcomeGuest and SiteTutorial pages and perform the exercises there.
  3. Look at the SomeBasics, ATasteOfTWiki, and GoodStyle for information about how to proceed.
  4. Search on the letters FAQ and you will get about a dozen pages. I am interested in documenting what you are thinking about and questioning as a new author. Add your questions to the FAQs and we will get them answered so that other authors can search and read what you learned. I recommend the page FAQWelcomeGuest as a start.
  5. Experiment by editing some pages and creating others. You can modify your own profile page to add other information. Consider creating your resume and uploading a photo as I have done. Create test pages in the Sandbox web.
  6. Click on Notifications in the left menu bar and add your wikiname to register for an email notification that will tell you what pages have changed (by all authors). Just add your name to the bullet list on the notify registration page. The emails are sent each day between 5 and 6 PM Eastern time.
  7. Look at how some of the pages are built to see examples of how screen shots, headings, graphics, and plugins are handled. Look at the template pages to get ideas about new pages and topics that you might want to create. All template pages are listed at the TemplateHome link.
  8. If you need access to an R12 Vision Demo instance, you can register to gain access at http://www.oraclecontractors.com.

When you have completed the above items, I think you are ready to start editing some pages. If you want to focus on one specific area, you can own that topic by editing 50-75 pages and moderating future changes as other readers and authors use those pages and add to them. Or, you could complete 50-75 pages spread over many modules based on what you are comfortable writing about. If you make a significant contribution to a page, add your wikiname to the contributing author's line at the bottom of the page. Feel free to reference these pages when you are talking about your R12 credentials. Being a published author is a powerful recommendation.

If you make it this far and are still interested in adding content to the site, just let me know. I have another web site that I have developed for authors with a writing tool kit and some more sophisticated writing tools. That will get you to the next level and we can build you a writing work bench.
