Encumbrance Accounting Introduction

The budgeting in the public sector (government, government enterprise and non-profit) normally define budgetary control and perform funds checking or availability of funds on each of their transactions. Encumbrances are the reserving of funds for those transactions. When the profile for budgetary control is turned on or enabled in the General Ledger encumbrances are automatically created from requisitions and purchase orders. Additionally a manual encumbrance journal entry can be created. See budgetary accounting.

There are two predefined Encumbrance Types in Oracle General Ledger, Commitments and Obligations. Additional Encumbrance types can be defined based upon an organization’s internal requirements.
